We're investing over $850 million to build a bigger and better Ipswich Hospital.

The upgrades include:

  • a new building
  • major upgrades to our existing hospital buildings and services
  • more beds and operating rooms
  • new medical and surgery wards
  • more health services.

There may be changes to hospital entry points or parking when we're building. If you’re going to hospital, you can search our health services to check for any changes you need to know about.

Why we're expanding

West Moreton is the fastest growing region in Queensland. Our population is expected to grow to more than 636,000 people by 2046.

The Queensland Government is funding the expansion to make sure we meet the needs of our community, now and in the future.

We've planned the upgrades based on:

  • our medical and clinical health service needs
  • information about our population and expected growth
  • feedback and consultation with our patients and community
  • advice from builders, engineers and design experts
  • feedback from our staff, nurses, doctors and clinical experts.

What we're building

We're upgrading our buildings and services in stages. The program includes the following building and service upgrades.

  • New buildings for acute and mental health services

  • New and expanded emergency department

  • Central sterilisation service

  • Satellite medical imaging service

  • More operating theatres

  • Medical and surgical ward with 26 beds

Stage 1

We started Stage 1 in 2019 and finished mid 2024. The $146.3 million upgrade increased the size of the hospital, added more beds and improved our existing buildings and services.

We demolished the existing Mental Health Unit during this stage of the project. We also purchased land for a new health precinct in South Street, Ipswich.

Patients and visitors are using our new and renovated facilities in a modern and comfortable setting:

  • medical and surgical ward with 26 beds
  • allied health services outpatient unit
  • oncology day unit
  • new building for our Mental Health Acute Inpatient Service on Chelmsford Avenue
  • a state of the art magnetic resonance imaging suite.

Stage 2

Stage 2 is a $710 million upgrade for new facilities and buildings. It includes:

  • 200 new beds
  • a new acute services building
  • a new and expanded emergency department
  • more operating theatres
  • a satellite medical imaging service
  • a central sterilisation service
  • back of house services
  • shell spaces for future development.

Early works started in early 2024.

We expect to finish construction for Stage 2 in 2027.

Get involved

We’re working with people and groups from our community to help plan the upgrades and get feedback. This includes design user groups where we co-design clinical and public spaces with architects and clinicians.

We're also working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Traditional Owners to make sure the upgrades are culturally safe.

Jobs

As we grow and finish our upgrades, we’ll need new staff members to join our team. We'll have jobs across all areas including nursing, medicine, allied health and business support.

You can search our vacancies or register your interest for future jobs when our hospital upgrades open.
