Midwife Liz Milroy plays a special role in supporting women with type 1 diabetes throughout their pregnancy journey.
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high.
This can increase the risks of preterm birth, stillbirth and complications from large birth weight.
With a 20-year career as a midwife, her mantra is to let women own their health journey.
As a Midwifery Nurse Navigator, she coordinates care for mothers across the region, providing support, advocacy, and improving health literacy.
“Our role is to ensure our health services fit the women we see, and to help them make the best choices for their individual situation," Liz said.
Pregnancy is often challenging for mums with type 1 diabetes due to increased monitoring, scans, medication, and testing.
Liz supports over 100 families each year through pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period.
She also assists mums with complex type 2 diabetes, those recovering from birth trauma, and women with high-risk pregnancies who do not engage in recommended care.
Liz is a strong advocate for her patients and a champion for the obstetrics and perinatal staff she works with.
“I help staff prepare for complex cases that may present at any time of the day or night, and on the flip side, I walk the corridors with women and their families to prepare them for the birthing experience.”
Thank you, Liz, for the work you do to support women and families in West Moreton.
